The Crown Estate in Scotland
With a large rural estate and notable marine holdings in Scotland, The Crown Estate has a significant presence in Scotland. This is true not only of the commercial value of the estate, but in the relationships we have established at all levels of public and business life. We and our managing agents work with a range of organisations and individuals, public and private, and our activity in Scotland extends beyond the traditional workings of a landed estate.
For instance, we engage with organisations as diverse as the Scottish Government and the Green Tourism Business Scheme. Among our tenants we can count fish farmers and conservation organisations.
We have recently granted leases for the world’s first wave and tidal energy devices, in the Pentland Firth and Orkney waters. In Edinburgh we have a stake in the retail park at Fort Kinnaird, five kilometres south-east of Edinburgh, through our 50 per cent share of the Gibraltar Limited Partnership.
Our rural estates host nine Sites of Special Scientific Interest. We are the guardian of naturally occurring oysters and mussels in Scotland. We have working relationships with Highlands and Islands Enterprise and the Scottish Environment Protection Agency. Almost 5,000 hectares of forestry is under our direct management. We hold the rights to salmon fishings, leasing them to both associations and private individuals.
The Scottish Commissioner
Gareth Baird is our Scottish Commissioner. Appointed as a non-executive Board member in October 2009 he became Scottish Commissioner at the start of 2010.
A well known farmer from near Kelso in the Borders, Gareth is a third generation farming tenant involved in arable and beef production, and is a leading figure in Scotland’s agricultural and food and drink sectors.
Gareth said: “I am delighted to be part of the Board of The Crown Estate, an organisation which is recognised to be playing a key role in the rural economy as well as being a progressive landlord. I feel very strongly that sound governance and good teamwork are key to strong performance and The Crown Estate’s values of commercialism, integrity and stewardship resonate very powerfully with me.
“I have particularly enjoyed building on the partnerships The Crown Estate has created with the Scottish Government and industry to develop renewable energy, and playing my part in ensuring that Scotland benefits from these opportunities both in terms of economic development and tackling climate change.
“In terms of the marine and rural sectors, I am committed to sustainable development amongst Scotland’s communities, as well as bringing people together to work collaboratively. In this respect I am strongly supportive of local enterprise and production which I believe can benefit Scotland as a whole.”
Gareth was appointed Scottish Commissioner upon the retirement of Ian Grant CBE, the former Crown Estate Chairman, on December 31 2009.
